![]() This means that it's always a good idea to check and reset the inertia switch whenever testing the fuel pump. It'll crank but not start, which can lead you to believe that the fuel pump is bad.Īlthough it's designed to activate during a severe impact caused by an automobile accident, sometimes it gets activated by less than severe impacts. When the inertia switch is jolted into action, the engine is not gonna' start. It's usually located on the right side (passenger side) of the dash, below the glove box or in the trunk of the car. This switch is a safety device that de-activates the fuel pump in case of an impact and once it activates, you have to manually reset it. Fuel Pump Inertia SwitchĪs you're probably already aware, your Ford Taurus (Mercury Sable) comes equipped with a fuel pump inertia switch. Whether your Ford Taurus uses a plastic intake plenum (photo above) or a aluminum metal plenum (see photo below), the Schrader valve is in the same place. NOTE: The Schrader valve is located on the fuel injector rail (behind the alternaor). Go to: TEST 1: Checking Fuel Pressure With A Fuel Pressure Gauge. Now, remember what I said about this test not being very accurate? Well, I suggest you do one more test and this is to check the fuel pressure with a fuel pressure test gauge. This usually means that a lack of fuel IS NOT the reason your car is not starting. Go to: TEST 1: Checking Fuel Pressure With A Fuel Pressure Gauge.ĬASE 2: The engine did not start, not even momentarily. Your next step is to check to see what the fuel pressure is with a fuel pressure test gauge. This test result tells you that the no-start problem is due to a lack of fuel. OK, let's find out what your results mean:ĬASE 1: If the engine started and ran for a few seconds. also on the drivers side same area there is a green ground with the same issue not sure what that is for but I hit it with the grinder also. You'll get one of two results with this test:ġ.) The engine will start momentarily and after a few seconds will die or.Ģ.) The engine will only crank but not start at all. from what I understand is that the inertia switch is in the same wiring as the fuel pump and the bad ground causes the fuel pump to overheat and it shuts off until it cools s worth a try took me all of 15 min and when you put the trunk liner back together you can't see a thing. I took off the ground took my small grinder out with a wire wheel and took the paint off right to bare metal and haven't seen this issue again yet. the problem is the fender is painted and the ground does not make good contact. ![]() the switch has 2 black wires for ground that is also bolted to the inner fender. the switch is designed to shut the fuel pump off incase of an accident. ![]() what I found on the web is there is a "inertia" switch in the trunk on the passenger side bolted to the inner fender under the liner. but before I did that (expensive test) I did some research it seemed like this is a problem with the Taurus. thinking I had a fuel pump going out or the fuel pressure sensor I was going to go with the sensor for about $100. car would crank but not fire if I let it sit for about 20-30 minutes car would fire up and run. Hi I have a 2002 Taurus that had the following issue: drive it for a bit shut it off come back out after about 10 min or so car would start up take off and it would stall out like it ran out of gas.
